Easter Sunday

Welcome and Call to Worship

Call to Worship
(based on Psalm 118)

This is the day that the Lord has made,

Let us rejoice and be glad in it,

We rejoice in the dawning of light and the empty tomb,

In the presence of angels and the peace of the garden,

In the rising of Jesus and the defeat of death,

We give thanks to the Lord for he is good,

His steadfast love endures for ever,

Let us rejoice and be glad in it,

Praise the Lord,

Alleluia!

Hymn 415 This Joyful Eastertide

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

(from Very Reverend Dr Derek Browning, Moderator of Edinburgh Presbytery)

Lord Jesus Christ,

Come, stand among us,

that we might see You by our side,

that we might hear You call our names,

that we might now, on this heady day of joy,

be still, right now, and know that You are God.

We give You heartfelt thanks from our full hearts.

We bring to You our prayers this day

For a world needing Easter.

We pray for those locked in by hurt, and loneliness and grief.

We pray for those locked in by addiction, and hunger, and poverty.

We pray that we, inspired by Your Good News this Easter Day,

may bring our practical care and help to those who call out,

and to those who are silent,

and in our lived-out faith and love, show no partiality

as we bring what hope we can to those in need.

Today we pray for our nation, for our Queen,

and for those who shape the future of our country and our world.

In times of uncertainty make us confident with kindness.

In times of frustration, make us gentle with vision.

Help us to be the Easter people bringing light into our world.

Lord Jesus Christ,

for the Church we pray, that in our work and witness

we may be generous in our believing,

and joyful in our serving.

Help us to blend tradition and newness,

to keep our faith and work a power for good,

and a dynamic for reconciliation and renewal.

This Easter Day, this new beginning, this time of lifting up,

lift up our heads and hearts, lift up our eyes and voices,

for our Lord Jesus Christ is risen!

And there is hope!

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Amen

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

God of wonder, we thank you for bringing us together as your people to be part of the crowd saying, “Hosanna in the highest, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Thank you for enabling people to administer the vaccines and those to set up our church in a way that we can safely worship you. We pray for those joining online knowing that where ever we are we can worship you.  We offer our thanks for all those who work in the emergency services saving lives and keeping us safe.

Thank you for your enduring love even when our action displeases you. We pray for our world where there is conflict.  Bring peace where there is natural disaster.  Bring healing and hope.  In particular we pray for people in Myanmar and Yemen.   Closer to home we pray for our community in Leith, that you continue to bless us and make yourself known to us, our neighbours and friends.

God the comforter, we pray for those who are ill, or have recently died, and for their families. May they know your presence with them now and always.

Finally, in a few moments of quiet, we bring what is on our own heart before you.

All these things we pray in your name.

Amen

and Reflection We wish to see Jesus by Katherine Taylor

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

God of Love, Thank You for the new life You give us. Thank You for the people who love us and for all that makes our hearts sing.  Thank you for this day and that we may follow Jesus. Thank you for the time we have shared together in worship in spirit and for our closer connection to You.

God of Life, Thank you for those who have given up their lives for You through the ages and for the example of their trust in You. Thank you for  those who  risk their lives for others now  in the armed forces, in the police and rescue services for  fire , sea and mountain, in  hospitals and medical care, and in providing  all the things we need to live in food and transport.

God of Creation,   thank You for the wonder of the world.  We pray for the health of the earth. We pray for the preparations for the climate change conference in Glasgow this year, for agreement between the nations and for action to protect the earth and all its creatures.  Lead us to change what we can in our own lives and keep us ever mindful of the beauty you have given us. Help us to live lightly on the earth as good teachers for our children.

God of Peace, We pray for those who risk all and give all in standing against violence, for protestors in Myanmar and in all places who stand fast against oppressive systems of power. May they know Your courage and Your strength and Your protection from harm.

Lord, we pray for our leaders in government and for all who have hard decisions to make today at work or at home and who struggle to know which way to go. Fill them with Your wisdom Lord and help them to move on, trusting that You are with them always.

Lord, we pray for those who suffering now, held fast on a cross of pain or grief, depression or addiction. We pray for those who are near to death.  May they know Your healing touch and the comfort of Your arms.

In silence, we lift our own prayers up to You, for ourselves, our families and our friends.

Lord in Your mercy,

Hear our prayer,

Amen
